Not just a singer.
Not just a bass player.
XXXX X XX X.

Many people might not have Xenia Gott on their radar yet but she’s built a considerable track record touring across Europe with previous bands such as Lucy, Not The Whore (psychedelic rock) and Droppings (noise rock). As their lead singer (and bassplayer) she performed live for years gaining a notorious reputation with her explosive performances on stage. Through these experiences, she acquired a broad range of musical skills and contributed to the recording of several CDs, solidifying her reputation in the alternative underground scene.

With her first solo album '8' (2018), Xenia steps into the spotlight under her own name, taking on the roles of producer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist.

Debut album '8'′'
The album is filled with obscure experimental pop compositions reminding of Eurythmics and PJ Harvey. Influences that are evident in the way she melds eclectic elements and creates a sonic tapestry that is both familiar and refreshingly original.

As a musician and recording artist Xenia is known for her powervocals and performances. Her Lo-Fi music defies conventional expectations and her distorted placement of samples and bass-lines tear down any HiFi-ambitions or romantic expectations. This approach not only sets her apart from mainstream artists but it’s also a reminder that true artistry often lies in breaking the mold and daring to be different.

The second single & accompanying video clip ‘Like’ from Xenia’s album ‘8’ was inspired by ‘Page of madness‘. A silent, avant-garde horror film by Japanese film director Teinosuke Kinugasa (1926). Incorporating similar wild dance and quick cuts Xenia set out to capture the same eerie atmosphere of Teinosuke’s film. She took a hands-on approach to the creation of her video, filming the sequences personally and taking charge of the montage process.

(ab) Nomalie

Xenia’s third album (2022) is a project that pushes the boundaries of traditional sound compositions. (Ab)Nomalie explores the themes surrounding societal norms and the concept of what is deemed appropriate. It’s not just about music; it is accompanied by a series of (digital) collages that live on the edge of acceptance, challenging the listener to rethink their perceptions.

In May 2022 Xenia was invited to participate in a Residency at Klangendum/WORM/CEM Studio. This opportunity allowed her to create a new work for Dr. Klangendum, a broadcast that is part of De Concertzender. Central to her research and creative output during this residency was the theme of fear — fear of the other, the fear of being different, and the fear of deviating from what is considered normal.

The inspiration behind the project
Xenia’s personal experiences with mental disorders (deviating from the ‘normal’) have significantly shaped her artistic journey so far, influencing both her visual and auditory works. By manipulating sound in unconventional ways, she creates sonic experiences that mimic the often complex and unpredictable inner workings of the mind, allowing listeners to feel the chaotic nature of these mental processes.

With (Ab)Nomalie she hopes listeners will be persuaded to step outside their comfort zones and embrace the uncomfortable. She believes that a certain amount of discomfort and disruption could cultivate greater understanding and insight into the unconscious and disturbed processes of not just those with mental disorders, but of anyone who could experience such a temporary kind of state under certain circumstances.

ABOUT

Xenia Gott is a multidisciplinary artist based in the Netherlands.

She utilizes a diverse range of mixed media, including (digital) collage, painting, illustration, silk screen printing and audiovisual art.

Central to her artwork lies the exploration and capture of random (online) impressions and the transformation of these fleeting moments into her own world of figurative sketches.

Collage art & illustration

Recurring themes in Xenia’s artwork include society, social order, and mental disorder. Her compositions often feature figures enduring struggle — anti-heroes and underdogs living on society’s edge. These fringe characters look different, behave differently, challenging our perspectives, balancing between the ‘normal’ and the ‘abnormal’. Through her art, Xenia offers a personal yet relatable narrative, exploring the human condition with a blend of humor, empathy and insight.

Her intuitive approach and layered flow of consciousness create a rich visual language that resonates with audiences. By focusing on themes of societal and mental struggles, Xenia not only mirrors the world around her but also fosters contemplation and dialogue. Her art is a reminder of the unseen battles faced by many and the growth that can arise from ‘madness’.
